Sometimes, the worst thing that could happen ends up paving the way for the best things that will ever happen. (See my article on why being cheated on by the love of my life was one of the best things to ever happen to me for personal proof on that one!)
7. “We always believe our first love is our last, and our last love our first”- George John Whyte-Melville
No one can really know what love us until they experience it and until then, certain things may feel like love and maybe look like it, but you won’t know the truth until you find the real thing. I’m not saying that all love that didn’t last wasn’t love. But like I said, love comes in many shades and forms. You can love someone for a period of time but that love might have an expiration date, especially when you see who that person truly is and realize they weren’t who you thought. (Read Eric’s Ask a Guy on how to find love to learn exactly what it takes to fine the one.)
8. “We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” – Kenji Miyazawa
Try not to see your pain as a punishment and instead, use it as a chance to learn and grow. As much as pain sucks, nothing forces us to face ourselves and discover what we’re really made of quite like it. Try to use your pain to become an even better and stronger person than you were before.
9. “You cannot let go of someone you never really had, and if you had them you wouldn’t have to let go.” – Dr. Gary Funk
This quote has been in my collection for years but I was never really so into it until I experienced what he was saying first hand. When it’s real love, you fight for it, you work on it, you invest and you commit with all of your being. Real love entails giving all of yourself to that other person and it doesn’t exist if one person can’t or won’t. Maybe you convince yourself this is the real thing and if only such- and-such changed then everything would be perfect. If one person checks out as soon as the road gets a little rocky, or if they hold back from going all in, then you never really had them to begin with and it really isn’t a loss.
10. “Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know” – Pema Chodron
A breakup is the perfect opportunity to really get to know yourself, to learn your strengths and also to discover what you could work on. If you always repeat the same patterns the same things will continue happening to you. This is why an excellent thing to do after a breakup is take stock of what you learned, what mistakes you made, what you did right, what you did wrong, what you keep doing over and over. Really look at what you got out of this relationship and identify how you can use these skills to make your next relationship even more amazing.
