If you know me, or follow our twitter account, then you know that I am absolutely fanatical about music. Nothing lights me up, exhilarates, or gets me going like a truly gorgeous song. I have also cultivated a knack for creating playlists and recommending music and have been getting tons of requests.
In what will go down as one of the greatest things to ever happen to me, American Express decided to send me to Coachella, a massive music festival taking place in CA featuring the most insane roster I have ever seen. (In case you don’t follow our tweets, I recently started consulting on the new Amex Zync card along with a bunch of other bloggers and writers.) I am honestly bursting at the seams with excitement, it’s at a level that mere words could never convey, seriously!
As a pre-show warm-up, I was considering doing a “Coachella Packing List” post. However, to comemorate this most blessed occasion, I decided to switch it up by recommend tunes, rather than fashion, for a change. Out of all the amazing songs that will be heard from a roster of unbelievable bands, these are my top 10 favorites:
1. “Nobody Gets Me But You”- Spoon
Spoon is really well known and their amazing sound as attracted a remarkably diverse audience. I just saw them in concert a few weeks ago and they absolutely blew me away. This song features everything I love about Spoon- amazing vocals (the lead singer has a voice so sexy it can make strait men swoon), a catchy beat, and innovative instrumentals (speaking of which, I would also highly recommend “I Saw the Light”… just wait until the 3:15 mark!)
2. “Sunrise”- Yeasayer
Yeasayer just has an all-around amazing sound. It’s experimental, but not too wild and crazy. This song is insanely addicting, definitely one of those listen to over and over and over agains.
3. “Knife”- Grizzly Bear
The harmonies and soothing beats that Grizzly Bear are known for will put you in a hypnotic trance that you will never want to emerge from. All of their songs are phenomenal but this one is just at a whole new level. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to this song, but I get chills every single time (especially at the 3.05 mark, my God!).
4. “Daylight”- Matt & Kim
Matt & Kim have a really fun, jovial, uplifting sound. Their melodies are really catchy, but they have a very unique, innovative sound. This song lifts my spirits every time and is a great one to start the day with.
5. “11th Dimension”- Julian Casablancas
If you’re a fan of The Strokes then you are familiar with Julian’s distinct, pitch perfect, insanely sexy vocal skills. His solo album is filled with one amazing track after the next (you might recognize the songs from an episode of Gossip Girl that ran a few weeks ago), but this is one you can’t get sick of and can’t help but move to. I actually saw him live a few months ago and it was hands down one of the best shows I”ve ever been to.
6. “Dog Days Are Over”- Florence + The Machine
Florence + The Machine are major up and comers due to their catchy, eclectic sound. This song is a bit pop, a bit rock, and totally addicting.
7. “I Feel Weird”- Steel Train
I actually went to high-school with some of the guys in this band but only recently rediscovered them. This song is one of those indie tunes with mass appeal, definitely cool-sounding and unique but undeniably upbeat and catchy.
8. “Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters”- MGMT
By now, everyone knows MGMT. However, you may not know this track, it seems to have gotten lost in between Electric Feel and Kids and all of their other mega-hits. WHile I”ve somewhat tired of the others, I find something new to appreciate about this song every time.
9. “Mornings”- Portugal, The Man
This band is my latest discovery and I am obsessed. They are definitely on the more mellow end of the spectrum, but sometimes mellow is what you crave! This song is just beautiful. It’s soft, melodic, and it’s one of those songs that makes you stop what you’re doing so you can listen more intently.
10. “I Cut Like A Buffalo”- The Dead Weather
Not surprisingly, this supergroup- composed of Alison Mosshart (The Kills and Discount), Jack White (The White Stripes and The Raconteurs), Dean Fertita ( Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence ( The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes)- has collectively created an insanely unique sound. This song just just awesome. It’s cool it’s entrancing, it’s just brilliant all around.
