After 3 months of no contact (other than the occasional Instagram “like,”) my ex sent me a picture of something and asked if I was interested in it ( I was). We have arranged to get together at his place so I can pick it up, but my question is– why did he bother? Does he have an ulterior motive? It will be the first time talking/ seeing each other and my anxiety is at all time high.

We need more details here, what is this something? Why do you need it so badly?

It’s a desk that he built for me, knowing I needed one like back in the day. SO why did he bother building it now? And his place because I pass by it on my way home from work so its convenient for me…

How in the world can we possibly know why he build you a desk. We well i anyway sort of assume he does it because he is fond of you but then we dont know one thing about this relationship. Not how long it was, why you two broke up. So i suggest going to the source and ask him. Or find out when you come pick it up. Its not that complicated

I’m with Newbie, you’re questions were:
“why did he bother? Does he have an ulterior motive?”
We can’t answer these for you because we have no information about your relationship or why it ended, etc.
Desk or no desk, it’s clear you want to see him since you’re willing to meet at HIS place for it. You will need to ask him all your questions.
