You posted before it was long distance and you were worried he’d get attached, right? You should ask him what he’s looking for from the dating site and if he’s open to long distance and go from there. If neither of you want long distance, then pull back on the friendship so that he’s not a distraction for you meeting someone actually available to you. Which isn’t recommending to never talk to him again if you want to be friends with him, but is recommending giving yourself enough distance that he’s not a factor in any of your other attachments or decisions, you have no agenda around staying in touch. But only you know if you can handle that without no contact. Things getting awkward honestly don’t matter if you’ve only known him a month and you aren’t going to date. Plus, if you truly want to be friends (and only friends), you’ll both push through the awkwardness with a bit of time and the reset expectations of only being friends, no more loaded expectations inherent to meeting on a dating website. So I wouldn’t worry much even if things are briefly awkward. It’s still better to not keep yourself in limbo.
