He said "I Love You" in his sleep

I’ve been seeing this guy for about two months. We talked about becoming official but he said he isn’t ready as he is starting a big new job soon & doesn’t have his own car yet. He wants to be stable before being in a relationship. He’s 20 so I think that’s understandable unless it’s just an excuse. So though we are exclusive, we are not official.

Last night when I slept over as I normally do a few times a week, he kept saying “I love you” to me in his sleep. He sleep talks every night so his sleep talking didn’t surprise me, what he said did. We haven’t said that to one another yet. Then when we started waking up this morning, he pulled me in while half conscious and another I love you slipped out of his mouth. This time he heard himself say it and apologized because he didn’t want to scare me.

Did he mean it? If so, do you think his reason for not yet wanting to be official is legit?

I wouldn’t read anything into it until he says it consciously. I sleep talk and say all sorts of things I don’t mean.
