OMG Serena that helped me so much!!!! I just went to see Hyundai and Kia dealerships yesterday. I am planning to go to a Toyota dealership today. Then on my list is also Honda & Nissan. I am looking for fuel efficient cars and cars which do not break down very often. Any pointers on that?
September 16, 2014 at 10:30 am #364669mariaThe three best middle priced cars are IMO:
1. Toyota 2. Volkswagen 3. Honda (in that order).
Volvo, Suzuki and Audi are good as well, even if Audi is a bit pricier.
I’m sorry to hear that phone guy is disappointing you, and glad to hear that you as usual have lots of other guys to have fun with.
Hot guy… there’s not a doubt in my mind that he’ll surrender… it’s only a matter of time really ;-) …
September 16, 2014 at 11:01 am #364674SherriMaria, I love window shopping and price comparing. I do all the ordering for my company except for IT stuff. So going to various dealerships I am trying to learn what I want and don’t want in a car. And doing this is not a chore rather feels like shopping :D. I have almost 70% made up my mind to get a new car next year. I just want to talk to my mechanic before making a definite decision. I am also going to be shadowing kijiji to check to see how people sell their cars for parts or scrap. Now if only an FWNB will come my way to help me with the information, that would be great ;) . I did tell one of my gfs that when I need advice I may borrow her bf’s mind LOL. Her car recently died and her bf helped her buy a used car. She said u first decide which car make/model you want to go with and then for sure you can pick his brain. hahaha
September 16, 2014 at 11:03 am #364676mariaAlso… really good points Serena!
If the car is rusted car dealers/people will offer to pay you far less than the blue/black book value though.
You can sell the tires separately (depending on rims and brand etc, you can probably get around $300 for the set) (put up an ad on Craigslist). The battery may fit in your new car (and you can keep it as an extra battery).
You can also try to sell the car (not in parts) on Craigslist.
Fixing a really rusted exterior is not a good idea, it costs a lot and the rust will “eat through” the new lacquer and start to come back within a year.
Hope that helps…
September 16, 2014 at 11:11 am #364677mariaWe posted almost at the same time…
Yes, both research and guy input is a good idea when it comes to buying a car…
September 16, 2014 at 11:16 am #364679SherriI was also thinking of talking to my mechanic as to cost of parts and stuff. Because I plan to use the car I buy as long as possible so maintenance will definitely have to be looked at and if the parts cost much more then I don’t want to invest in such a car. So I am planning to make a list of cars of what I like, research their fuel efficiency and safety rating and shortlist accordingly and then talk to my mechanic re difference in cost if things need fixing and then decide. As the car I only want to buy next spring after all the snow melts, I have months to do my research. And then a couple of different FWNB guy’s input will definitely help :)
September 16, 2014 at 11:34 am #364682mariaParts are usually cheaper in the country where the car was made (Volvo parts are cheap in Sweden, and Ford parts in the US etc). German and Asian parts are probably the same price in Europe as in the US…
With that much research, I’m sure you’ll find the perfect car :-D
I’m obsessed with cars so I’m totally looking forward to your future “car posts”…
September 16, 2014 at 1:12 pm #364692HarleyWOW.. you girls amaze me about cars ! I should post you Frank over. he’s in the mechanic trade !
My boss only wanted to talk about work. PHEW ! On A SOUR note, I got a phone call from our IT/SECURITY telling me to turn my computer off immediately, someone would be down to collect it and investigate it for whether I was breaching state security. I WAS SCARED SHITLESS. What had i done ??? turned out and email from…. a new mode.. had a virus ! Told my bosses i was NOT HAPPY about how IT security had handled the matter as they really upset me and embarrassed me, thinking was I going to be suspended and investigated !
Mike is back liking my posts on Fb and saying to a mutual mate his plans for the weekend. I am ignoring !

September 16, 2014 at 6:13 pm #364754redOh harley! So happy for you about the house. You are a home owner!!!yipeeeee!
Holy shit I thought postal investagators were scary, but that would have given me a heart attack. Breaching state security holy shit!
I have the shakes just reading about it. Your not going to get in truble for reading emails from a new mode at work are you.
You should be pissed for the way they handled it.Errrrr mike! Men! What an ass.
September 16, 2014 at 6:20 pm #364755redMen’s brains vs women’s brains
We’re gonna start discussing men’s brains, women’s brains and how they’re very different from each other. Now I wanna start with men’s brains. Right? Men’s brain are very unique, men’s brains are made up of little boxes and we have a box for everything. We have a box for the car. We got a box for the money. We got a box for the job, we got a box for you , we got a box for the kids, we got a box for your mother somewhere in the basement.
We got boxes everywhere, and the rule is: “the boxes don’t touch”. When a man discusses a particular subject, we go to that particular box, we pull that box out, we open the box, we discuss only what is in that box, alright? and then we close the box and put it away being very, very careful not to touch any other boxes.
Now women’s brains are very, very different from men’s brains. Women’s brains are made up of a big ball of wire, and every thing is connected to everything. The money’s connected to the car, the car’s connected to your job and the kids are connected to your mother, and everything’s connected to everything ….
It’s like the Internet super highway, Ok? And it’s all driven by energy that we call emotion. This is zzzzz. It’s one of the reasons why women tend to remember everything. Because if you take an event and you connect it to an emotion, it burns in your memory and you can remember it forever. The same thing happens for men, it just doesn’t happen very often because, quite frankly, we don’t care.
Women tend to care about everything! And she just loves it. Ok?
Now, men, we have a box in our brain that most women are not aware of. This particular box has nothing in it. It’s true, it’s true. In fact, we call it the “nothing box.” And of all the boxes a man has in his brain, the nothing box is our favourite box! If a man has the chance, he’ll go to his nothing box every time. That’s why a man can do something seemingly completely brain-dead for hours on end. You know, like fishing.
Now, they’ve actually measured this. The University of Pennsylvania, a couple of years ago, did a study, and discovered that men have the ability to think about absolutely nothing and still breathe. You know, they connected all the wires and stuff like that, marked the brain activity ….. Our brain is dead! Huh! Hang on.
Women can’t do it, they can’t do it, their minds never stop, and they don’t understand the nothing box and it drives them crazy because nothing drives a woman more crazy or makes you feel more irritated than to witness a man doing nothing!
September 16, 2014 at 6:44 pm #364762RavenRed … The above is hysterical!
September 16, 2014 at 7:02 pm #364767Dee DeeHi everyone, I can see that this thread has gone quite off topic but I am really interested in this topic (I am going through the same thing). I’ve seen mentions about Ireland here. I am Irish too! I feel that being Irish with a Catholic upbringing is very relevant to my connection with men. Number 1, our mixed messages about sexuality growing up. Number 2, not feeling “worthy enough” to be with a man who really loves us. It’s a big journey I’m constantly relfecting on and learning from. Hope we can have a discussion about our “nice girl” selves attracting awful behaviour from men
September 16, 2014 at 7:37 pm #364773redI am a smart, funny, sweet, good looking woman who is worth holding on to. When I like you I tell you. my down fall, I like rednecks, one redneck inpaticular. And I let him know that I like him. “Bud” is smart, funny, sexie as hell at least to me, but he is also driving me f-ing nuts with his behavior. It bothers me that it bothers me. It should not, I should not let it get to me. It does. Today I want to pop his nust off! I blame him for being an ass, but I blame my self and my nice girl behaviour for giving him the impreshion that what he is doing is exceptible. And I am realy pissed at myself for not telling him from the start, and now think that I have sent mixed signals and confused him so his behaviour is in part my fault.
September 17, 2014 at 12:55 am #364793mariaHarley, I’m glad the boss and IT thing was a false alarm…
Mike… is an idiot.
The house… does this mean it’s final… is it really yours now/soon!??
Red, REALLY interesting about the boxes. I consider meditation being in a nothing box/thinking about absolutely nothing though (and we all know women can do that)…
Re sending mixed signals… don’t blame yourself… just start sending clear signals from now on…
Dee Dee, I’m looking forward to hearing the other girl’s answers… I find the subject interesting but have zero experience in the matter… my upbringing was the exact opposite of yours…
Violetta, I MISS YOU, hope you’re doing fine <3
Serena, Chicago sounds great… I like the vibe of that city… big, bold, clean, lots of wind and water… and probably excellent shopping too lol…
Sherri, by new car, do you mean new as in straight from the manufacturers?
Hot guy… has not called or texted… He will though… he just needs a little time to process “what the hell” happened (and honestly, so do I)… plus, he doesn’t want to come off as too eager (a big no no if you only want casual)…
September 17, 2014 at 3:23 am #364798HarleyHi all. I feel better today. IT ae just going to 2wipe2 my computer.
house.. not sure yet, waiting on realtor to get his act together. Takes 2-3 months for a sale to go through here.. so notign concrte until 3 mths time !
2 other houses have come up I want to look at to. One in Kildare, one in Cork. NOTHING is final till my last red cent is paid over.
Dee Dee is COMPLETELY right in my book about Ireland and sexuality. see if Vi agrees. wew are taught sex is dirty, to marry first, put up with whatever shite the guy throws at us, it’s all our fault anyway, and tht we are basically good for nothign except breeding. unmarried mums are still an embarrssment in some families.. like mine… although they are better these days. Irish lads are very set in their ways and don’t have a lot of finesse with women.
In fairness, they HAVE improved a lot. Not all are bad, as Vi said in an earlier post. But.. they STIll could come on a long way in my opinion. For instance, an Irish lad thinks it acceptable to go to the pub after work, get twisted drunk, not bother phoning the wife to say where he is,stays tillclosing hour in the pub, couldn’t care less that she’s at home with the kids for hours, staggers in drunk, and complans his dinner is all dried up. And if he wife complains… “oh, how dare she “. Several of my male mates are like this. The old fashioned ones liek vanilla sex. . .no experimenting at all. And.. independent women embrrass them. They like the little wifey, under the thumb at home.
HENCE.. why I like guys other than Irish.
What does Vi think I wonder ?? And Dee Dee. And any other Irish ????
September 17, 2014 at 5:24 am #364801Dee DeeLovely to hear back from you Harley!! And hearing the names of Irish places :-) I’ve been living in Australia for 5 years and no Irish around where I live. However the culture is not so different. I still attract the same behaviour from men and must admit that I go on and off “slutty phases”, being super flirty with men, some sort of rebellion from my youth of “sex being bad”. I attract men sexually but then these short encounters are extremely damaging for me. If I do meet a man who I am really attracted to who shows some attraction to me I’m like “What… me?? Wonder what’s wrong with him” and then I feel the decent men who I am attracted to pick up on my insecure signals and get scared away. I feel the unworthiness of having a partner who’ll blow me away…
September 17, 2014 at 5:26 am #364802Dee DeeI’m excited about other Irish on here While I said that our culture is similar, it’s still being difficult to connect with women counselors etc about this. I feel like us Irish has been brought up to have a particular innocence to us and to be a “nice girl” to men
September 17, 2014 at 5:38 am #364803mariaJeez, I’d be considered a total whore and rebel in Ireland… perhaps not a whore though, cause if the men are that bad I’d live in celibacy…
Harley, is the Kildare house in Loughanure or Castleroe East or somewhere else?
September 17, 2014 at 6:18 am #364808SassperillaInteresting stuff about being Irish! The guy I’m dating is Irish Catholic – I am not Irish or Catholic if you catch my drift. I sometimes wonder if that’s a bigger issue than he lets on. We have discussed it often and he says it’s not a problem for him but I do wonder what his family make of it and if that could be holding him back a little.
That said if it is a problem for him let me tell you he’s a massive hypocrite as it certainly does not stop him enjoying sex outside of marriage with someone who is not of his faith!
To me it’s silly that in 2014 we can still be held back from enjoying something special that works and makes us feel good by kowtowing to ancient beliefs and traditions.
(Just to add I am not religious at all and I don’t wish to offend anyone!! I respect that everyone has different faiths and beliefs that get them through this journey called life.)
September 17, 2014 at 6:44 am #364809HarleyYeo sass.. Irish guys more than others want agirl who looks good on the outside, not many PDA’s, can cook and a whore in the bedroom…sometimes they are even put off if you are too much of a whore adn YES , they DO be thinking, can I bring her home to mammy ! Irish mammies CAN be sooo judgemental. Oh yea, Maria.. it’s a world of it’s own here. I’m too wild and independent for most of them.. two even started telling me how to dress ! irish guys don’t TALk about emotion.. at all ! They go all red in the face and change the subject. We seriously are brought up with nuns and priests who taught us ” sex is dirty”. And so.. like Dee Dee says.. I think a LOT of Irish have complexes. I was a bit like this, but then I WENT TO GERMANY AND reallY DISCOVERED WHO I WAS, MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY.. I’VE never LOOKED BACK. i HAVE NO TIME FOR PRIESTS.. except the odd nice one and don’t believe any of the shite they puport to say. The Irish.. don’t break rules much.
Dee Dee. .how old are you ?? You gotta break the rules more like me. Get happy in yourself and sexuality.
Ha.. I just thought.. maybe my repressed Irishness re sexuality is WHY I find it sooo hard to orgasm ! Lightbulb moment. With Frank… I REALLy trusted him, maybe drink helped and I LET GO. Ha ! And talllady wonders why I want more of him !
House is a thatched house… preservation order again . on property.ie.. $40,000, somewhere beginning with F.. near athy.
September 17, 2014 at 8:48 am #364817SherriHi Ladies,
So yesterday I went to the Toyota and Honda showrooms too. Those cars are way above my price range. I spoke to my mechanic and told him about my dilemma. He said that it was my decision to make but it did not make sense spending so much on the van. I agreed. He said my car looks like it would go for a couple more months for the winter as I don’t want to buy a new (pre-owned) during the winter.
Maria – I am looking for a pre-owned but new for me right ;) . What do you think about Hyundai? As currently only that one looks within my budget
September 17, 2014 at 9:49 am #364831mariaHyundai is a cheap car for several reasons, no 1 being it will not last for many years or miles.
I don’t know from what year the cars you are looking at are, but I’d rather buy an older Toyota (or Volkswagen/Honda) than a newer Hyundai for the same price.
A Toyota can last for 400 000 km or more and a Hyundai max 200 000 km.
Also, I would buy it privately and not from a car dealer. Car dealers cars are A LOT more expensive… (like 25-75% more expensive)…
September 17, 2014 at 10:04 am #364834SherriThanks Maria for your input. I want to buy a car which has got less than 100,000 in mileage. The lesser the better but depends on the price too. I am looking for 2009 year or later (will take 2008 if the mileage is quite low) but can pay max $12000 incl tax for it and Toyota and other cars I will not find in that price range. My ex hubby used to own a Toyota and I would have loved to have been able to afford one. My mileage use is quite low. I have owned this van for around 7 years now and I have used less than 80000 in mileage on it. I will check out Volkswagen. Are German cars on the same wavelength as Japanese cars? I am def not looking for American cars. I am hoping I can buy it privately but going to dealerships to get advice/information on them so that way I am informed.
September 17, 2014 at 10:52 am #364852mariaMore expensive German cars like Mercedes, BMW and Audi are of better quality than Toyota.
Volkswagen are about the same quality as Toyota.
I depends on the model too though, both VW and Toyota have cheaper models and the quality of those are a little lower…
Have you been checking out car ads online yet?
September 17, 2014 at 11:04 am #364854SherriI have been checking out car ads but not religiously as I don’t want to buy a car before the winter. What are the cheaper models of VW and Toyota??
