Hi All,
I wonder if anyone could help me with an enquiry about Tinder. I have been chatting to someone who I met through Tinder for a a couple of weeks.
When we first met, the distance between us was 5km. Then he went away for a few days. I looked at his profile again, and it still said 5km, even though he said he was away. I thought it was weird and wondered if he wasn’t being truthful about going away.
Last night, I looked at his profile again, and it had changed to 30km away. Now it is back to 5km.
Can someone tell me when Tinder updates distance? Is it just when the user is logged in? Or is it a bit inaccurate – once I had someone come up as being 2km away when they were actually in Australia?!
I just want to know how accurate it is, as the guy said he’s not using Tinder any more, and I wondered if the fact his distance was changing is proof that he actually is! (Of course he is – fine by me – just wanted to know how it works really)
Thanks,
Lucy
TallspicyThere are levels:
A. Not actively swiping
B. Stop getting matches/suspending matches
C. Getting rid of accountBecause tinder does not have a last active indicator, you have no idea which one it is. If he is your boyfriend, I would want c.
There really is no way to know, but if the distance is still on, he has not done c.
LucyThanks.
Oh he’s definitely not my boyfriend by any means. I was just wondering why the distance indicator had been changing and whether that meant he had logged on recently.
LekishaHey!
Hope it helps. Since the new update of tinder(on ios) distance can be shown tricky! Plus, I know from experience,if you are in another continent, you still can get your distance be shown as 5 km, instead of thousands of km’s,based on a gps app on your phone, or if you were in another country before.
LekishaSo km doesn’t really matter there! You never know from the app…
AnonThe distance thing goes by where your phone is so you don’t have to be active, only have the app installed on your phone.
Also it’s wildly inaccurate, it told me once my date who was sat in front of me was 20km away (12 miles) even though he was actively on his profile with me there ( we were having a convo about the distance thing and wanted to see what happens when you’re right next to each other)
So short version is – don’t use it to try to figure anything out, it pretty much means nothing.
LucyAh, cool – thanx. That’s really useful information. The demons were starting up in my mind (even though this is only casual – it was making me think he was lying and start to set up the mental defences!)
Thanks for yr help.

CHi all, quick question kinda along these same lines…
A guy I’m interested in and excuse with for the time being said he got rid of tinder. I clicked on my app to see if he had changed his pictures or anything (kinda to see if I could tell any activity). The distance said 3 miles. Every time I had clicked the app to check, it said 3 miles. Now, suddenly today, it says 44 miles. None of his info is updated and his pictures haven’t changed.
My question is: did the distance update because I clicked the app (and it just took a few times to “update?”)
Or did it update because HE got on tinder?
Do just one of us or both of us have to get on for it to update? Thanks!
AnonA lot of people think just deleting the app from their phones is ” being off tinder” but it doesn’t delete the profile. So to everyone else they’ll look very much alive and kicking on tinder. As for the distance thing, it can be wildly inaccurate even if you have the app on your phone, so lord only knows what it does when the profile is still alive but the user has deleted the app. I wouldn’t worry about it
Snow WhiteBeing an IT specialist, don’t trust on tinder! Sometimes it takes a while to update your location. And it’s pretty easy to manipulate it if you use Android phones.
AnonHi guys, I have similar question. I got on tinder for fun, but I end up meeting someone and for god sake now I like her… Damn it! The thing is, I stopped using tinder but sometimes I go there to check if she updated the profile and the tricky thing is always the location… Does anyone know how Tinder updates your location? My first date with her she was in front of me and still showed 3km. But this past weekend she was far away on a trip and distance was still 3km. Today she returned home for weekend and the distance is 65km, so does it means that she logged on the app? We met about 2 months ago and I could see that even if she goes to the app she is not much active, firstly because I remember how was with me and secondly because the location rarely updates (maybe once a week) and I have other matches that constantly update so it means that app updates faster when you are active user. Could someone clarify me because the demons are starting in my head and I don’t wanna screw everything up creating an argue for such a stupid and insignificant (but that can be relevant) thing. Thanks, cheers!
VanOn another token: It appears everybody on here is basically saying the same thing; you can’t depend on the distance to show accurately, therefore, giving people room to manipulate. Meaning, someone can say that they are hundreds of miles away, BUT in actuality, they could be right around the corner from you….please remember this when you’re on these dating sites talking to all of the random people.
I’m just saying…
NikHi all!
Reading all of this, I was curious…So if you’re not clicking into the app, does it still continually update your KM as you still receive matches/keep the app on your phone? Or do you have to actually click into/open the app for your KM/distance to continually be updated?
Thank you in advance!!
NikShannonI would completely disregard that. I have an I Phone and when I post to Facebook sometimes it says I’m at my workplace, which is twenty-four miles away, and another time it said I was twentyish miles north of my actual location…and I hadn’t even been in that location recently. It’s not reliable. I wouldn’t trust it to make a judgement on a whether or not a person is being truthful.
TallspicyNo, you have to open up or login for it to change distance
CameronMy boyfriend works on the road, so my friend sent me a screen shot of his tinder profile, which says he is x amount of KM away from her town. I asked him about it and he said he hasn’t been on it since we started dating. But he “must have not gotten rid of it”. Does the distance update follow your move when you do not open the app, or does the app have to be open and being active for it to change?
TallspicyIt follows it when he opens the app.
AnonSimple question- if you change your location on tinder (using tinder plus) to some other city say from where you are currently what distance away from you is shown to other tinder users (is it the distance from the new location set or from your current location)?
Another anonTo the last question, it shows the city you are still in. I’ve matched with a few girls using tinder plus, who were moving to my city soon, and they were thousands of kms away.
WesleyShort simple question:
In a chat a year ago with someone who had deleted Tinder, a distance of 16km. I saw that it changed to 17 km today. Does that automatically mean that that person has reinstalled Tinder or could it just be me being 1km further away?Samdoes the mileage on tinder update if you still have the app on your phone and are connected to wifi but don’t open the app?
TallspicyOnly changes when you openeed the app, or forget to close it.., I
JaydenYou’re going to love this.
Use it at your peril because this way madness lies. You CAN check someones last active sn Tinder.
It has a desktop equivalent called Flamite. Search for it in google chrome. Add it to the chrome…theres instructions how to do this. Go to to your matches and click on the matches profile.
It’ll tell you when they were last on tinder.
There’s a tutorial on YouTube as to how to install and use Flamite.
If he’s still using you’ll know very soon.
TinaI don’t know the answer to your Tinder question, but you shouldn’t worry about these kinds of things right now. Your job is to get to know each other and hopefully enjoy time together along the way!
RoxyJust wondering how the mile radius works. Someone has had the same distance for over a month every time I check. Does that mean they haven’t moved in all that time or just isn’t actively using Tinder. If he was logged out of Tinder would anything show up under his name?! I go to messages and click his profile and always says the same distance no matter when or where I check
