Will he come back?

My ex broke up with me 4 months ago out of the blue after 2.5 years of dating. We are seniors in high school and he told me he wanted to focus on the future. I have been so kind and said that I loved him and that I hope he figured it out. About 1.5 months later he started talking to my friend. I found out later because she told me and felt bad. I told her it wasn’t ok and she has continued. After she told me she decided last minute to go out of state for college so she is 5 hours away and I know he’s not going there for college. I talked to him 1 month ago and I told him how much I loved him and how I didn’t understand and he was crying and he said how they were just friends and how he didn’t want a relationship. He seemed genuine. She left a month ago but he made it obvious they were still texting. I’ve started talking to guys and he knows and he seems really mad. We have been friendly at school but he’s been really hot and cold this week. He texted me good job about our race we had and asked a question like he wanted to start a conversation but then never responded. He asked and talked to my friend about me the other day. My friend was home yesterday and he was with her. He posted a pic right away with hearts in the caption. Idk if they are dating. How could they. He still cares for me. He told me he didn’t want a relationship and she is 5 hours away. I mean what does he want? What can I do to make him realize I’m right here and I love him. I have been so nice to him.
