Since it was brought up, I’ll say a little more on the topic of “old threads”…

You bring up a good point, Jo. It is indeed possible to auto-lock old threads, but that part isn’t really the blocking issue with that. What I’ve been mulling-over is the need to solve is the “human factors” aspect of the issue. If someone reads an old thread and feels compelled to talk about the subject – especially if their topic is “hey, this happened to me too!” – then I want to be able to (gently) direct our participants to open up a new thread from the same form. That gets more tricky. Handling that “the right way” is really important to me because I don’t want to put up perceived barriers in the way of posting.

Well that, and finding time to spend on it! :)

But having said that… it definitely seems like a lot of old threads are getting resurrected lately. (As annoying as it is to the community, it’s a “good thing” for the site itself. More and more people are finding threads that they think are applicable to them, and that’s nice.) I’m going to see if I can find time for a stopgap solution to help improve this, hopefully it’s something I can do this month.
